The Story Behind Fair Cape Dairies: A Journey of Tradition and Innovation

Fair Cape Dairies has a fascinating history that stretches back to 1675 when the first Loubser arrived in the Cape and began farming. Over time, the Loubser family’s dedication to farming flourished, and in 1876, they purchased Welgegund, marking a significant step in intensifying their farming efforts. Fast forward 145 years, and Fair Cape Dairies stands as a testament to their enduring legacy.

In 1955, under the stewardship of Eduard Loubser Sr, the fourth generation on Welgegund, the dairy journey began with just 64 Friesland cows. Back then, dairy production was tightly regulated, making it tough for smaller businesses to thrive. But in 1995, Fair Cape took a bold step forward by starting to process its own milk, focusing on meeting the needs of consumers with nutritious and delicious dairy products. Since then, they have grown from strength to strength, becoming a household name in the Western Cape and beyond. With a motto of “Do the Right Thing,” the company has prioritised consumer satisfaction and quality, earning a reputation as a leader in milk production and dairy products. Today, they employ over 1,600 people, reflecting its significant impact on the local economy.

Fair Cape’s influence extends beyond its products. The company plays a vital role in shaping the South African dairy industry, with its CEO serving on the Board of Directors of Milk SA and as the Chairman of SAMPRO (South African Milk Producers Association), helping to foster growth and prosperity for the sector. The choice of Friesland and Ayrshire cows underscores Fair Cape’s commitment to quality. These breeds are renowned for their exceptional milk production under optimal conditions, ensuring that Fair Cape’s products meet the highest standards, proven recently when they were the most decorated dairy at the SA Dairy Championships for the 5th year in a row.

The company has invested in great facilities to ensure the well-being of its cows, pioneering environmentally friendly practices like publishing its carbon footprint and transitioning to clear PET milk bottles for sustainability. With the 2021 launch of their solar farm, the company now milk their cows and produce their product exclusively using solar energy during daylight hours.

Their product range reflects its commitment to quality and innovation, offering a variety of dairy products filled with flavour and goodness. From fresh milk to yoghurts, fruit juices, long life milk and flavoured milks, they ensure that every product delivers on taste and nutrition.

In conclusion, Fair Cape Dairies is more than just a dairy company. It’s a symbol of tradition, innovation, and dedication to quality, serving as a leader of excellence in the South African dairy industry.
