Cookhouse Creamery: A True Taste of Tradition in the Eastern Cape

In the small town of Cookhouse in the Eastern Cape, surrounded by the striking Bosberg Mountains, a creamery is quietly producing some of South Africa’s finest traditional cheeses.

Cookhouse Creamery is known for its high-quality dairy products, made from fresh milk supplied by Just Milk, a local dairy farming group rooted in the region.

The surrounding landscape plays its part. Green pastures, fed by the Great Fish River, provide ideal grazing for dairy cows. Healthy, well-cared-for herds produce rich, high-quality milk — the foundation of the creamery’s exceptional cheeses and butter.

Every product that leaves Cookhouse Creamery carries the flavour of this environment, combined with decades of skill, care, and consistency.

A Creamery with a Rich History

Cookhouse Creamery has been part of the local agricultural story for nearly a century. Established in 1926, the factory has long been a cornerstone of the community.

In 2018, following the liquidation of Dairybelle, the Just Milk Group acquired the facility and restarted production in July of that year. Importantly, many of the experienced staff remained, preserving the knowledge and craftsmanship that define the creamery today.

Since reopening, the product range has expanded beyond its well-known cheddar to include mozzarella, gouda, butter, and flavoured butter — all produced to the same high standard.

A Sustainable Farming Model That Works

One of the standout features of Cookhouse Creamery is its practical, circular approach to sustainability.

The system works simply and efficiently:

  • Just Milk farms supply fresh milk to the creamery
  • The creamery produces cheese and sends whey to Number Two Piggeries
  • The piggeries return manure to fertilise the dairy pastures

This closed-loop system reduces waste, supports soil health, and strengthens the entire local agricultural ecosystem.

It is sustainability done properly — not as a buzzword, but as a working model.

Quality That Competes with the Best

Despite being smaller than many large-scale producers, Cookhouse Creamery has built a reputation that stands shoulder to shoulder with the best in the country.

The creamery has earned recognition at the South African Dairy Awards, consistently delivering products of exceptional quality.

A standout moment came in 2023, when its mozzarella received the prestigious Qualité Award — a mark of true excellence in dairy production.

Supporting the Local Community

Cookhouse Creamery processes up to 180,000 litres of milk per day, sourced from nearby Just Milk farms as well as Erinshope, a farm owned by the Nel family.

While much of the output goes into bulk cheese and curd production, the creamery remains deeply connected to its local community.

A small factory shop allows residents and visitors to purchase fresh cheese, butter, cream, and milk directly from the source. Fresh milk is also made available at a discounted price, helping support families in the area.

Growing for the Future

Growth has been a natural next step.

The Just Milk Group recently expanded operations with a second facility — Khowa Creamery — located on the Mountain View dairy farm near Khowa. Production began in June 2024, processing milk from nearby dairies.

Both facilities are positioned close to their milk sources, ensuring fast processing while the milk is still at peak quality.

The farms operate on pasture-based systems, with Jersey cows producing milk rich in butterfat and protein — ideal for premium dairy products.

Keeping Quality Moving with LMC Express

Producing exceptional dairy is only part of the journey. Getting it to market, safely and consistently, is just as important.

A Taste of Tradition That Keeps Moving Forward

Cookhouse Creamery is more than just a dairy producer. It is a story of heritage, resilience, and community — backed by modern systems and strong partnerships.

As the creamery continues to grow, one message remains simple and true:

Drink milk. Eat cheese. And enjoy the taste of tradition.
